Miami is a city like no other. It truly is a salad bowl of so many beautiful cultures. Hispanic and Caribbean culture can be seen all over the city from the architecture, the food and the fact that some places only speak Spanish. As means of survival and to take advantage of an opportunity to understand more of the culture I am living in, I decided to pursue learning Spanish. I’ve taken collection of Spanish grammar, conversation, and culture classes.

- Spanish 2

- Intermediate Spanish 2

- Review of Spanish Grammar

- Advanced Spanish Conversation

These classes with numerous intercultural exchanges has allowed me to experience Miami is whole new way. I was able to speak to connect and learn from so many Spanish only speaks. The Civil Engineer from Venezuela who came to Miami to escape political unrest, the Cuban doctor that can’t even find a job as a nurse in Miami, and the Argentinian professor by day and flamingo dance instructor by night. This is the importance of language. Connecting to the many stories and lessons that can be learned from people regardless of language.

My language learning aspiration is to become conversationally fluent in the main languages of the Latin American and Caribbean region. Since I want to work in this area, I want to be able to connect and serve this population the best way I can. Language is just not a mode of communication but a connection to culture. I feel it is integral to learn the language to truly understand the culture.

I am currently refining my Spanish and learning Haitian Kreyol. My goal is to become proficient in Spanish, Haitian Kreyol, Portuguese and French.
