These weekly discussions on New York Times articles were a safe place of academic discussion. It stimulated interesting conversations between students, faculty members and professionals in the field of discussion. Each time I attended I left out learning something new or a new way of thinking about a topic. Here are my take-aways from the discussions I attended.

 

Combating Human Trafficking: Partnerships, Prevention, Protection and Prosecution

Miami is a hub for human trafficking and we all need play our part in trying to stop this issue. There are different forms of human aside sex slavery such as forced labor and indentured servitude. Although the issue may seem large, there are many agencies and organizations dedicated to the end of human trafficking.

 

Disaster Response: Who is Responsible?

After the initial shock of disaster then comes the questions of who is to plan for it. Although it’s easy to point fingers, we all have a responsibility in assuring that disasters are prevented but also properly addressed and managed when they do. Most disaster can’t be prevented. But how we react to them can make the difference in someone’s life.

 

Your Inner Voice: Words Matter

Words are powerful. Our thoughts turn into action that turn into habit that turn into our character. Imagine a world where we build ourselves up with positivity and do the same with others. Words can never be taken back so we need to speak with intention.
